Overloading can result in poor cleaning and inadequate rinsing. That could explain the smell coming right back.
Adding more detergent doesn't seem to be much help, especially if getting well-rinsed is one of the problems.
Try washing the towels alone in hot water, and drying them on hot as well. Make sure they get really dry. This might solve the problem. You could then plan to give them their own load every other week. Or see if they will fit in with your sheets, which also benefit from hot water and a hot dryer.
I recommend unscented liquid detergent, and I'm very happy with the concentrated ones (All, for example). I figure anything that is leaving a scent needs to leave a residue, which isn't good. Why do my clean bath towels have an offensive odor after using them?
You got a lot of great answers... I especially liked Tory's!
Reduce the load size of your washing use a really high quality laundry liquid as the liquids tend to get rid of the body acid quicker than powders. maybe as suggested in earlier post wash seperately and use a high quality fabric softener in the towels.
sometimes putting a flannel in with the towel with four or five drops of lavender oil on it when you put it in with the towels helps them to smell really fresh
Because your house stinks
I don't have that happen to me at every place I wash my clothes. You said the clothes smell ';after'; you use them and not ';after'; you take them out of the washer or dryer. I was going to say that maybe it's the recycled water that has the bad odor or their pipes there at the coin-operated place. But if it's after you use them then there's something your body (from the handsoap you use in the shower) is adding to the towel that gives it that odor, some smells just don't combine well. But I would suggest to you that you wash those clothes at another place, and use Tide with bleach and hot water and see if that changes anything. Or even use Tide and wash a few towels in your bathtub and see what change is made. If the odor is still there then change the body soap you use.
they are dirty use them and waas them and stop smelling them
Try washing them in someone else's washer and dryer to see if that is actually the problem.
I have experienced this problem before when my husband was still a bachelor...towels can harbor bacteria and bacteria is what causes odor. It doesn't wash out no matter how hard you try. The ONLY thing that worked for me was bleach, and it worked like a charm. The only drawback is if you have colored towels. You might want to try bleach for colors.
Another thing I learned was that a man's towel gets twice as wet because there is more area to cover and all that body hair! Make sure your towels are hung up to dry completely. If your towel is still wet by your next morning shower, it's not getting enough ';air';! I have just resorted to white towels, so I can bleach them when needed.
It could be the washing machines are holding some mildew in them and that would be in your water as you wash. Use a cup of vinegar in your wash cycle along with your detergent.
You can also try an enzyme cleaner as well. There are lots of different ones out there.
Also, make sure your towels are really dry before you fold and put them away. Even a bit of moisture in them when you store them can cause a nasty odour to build in the fabric.
If you live in a humid environment dont store your towels in an enclosed space, let them have air movement so they can breathe.
If all else fails there is the old old OLD trick that may do it for you:
Remove Bad Smells
Articles of clothing, or of any other character, which have become impregnated with bad-smelling substances, will be freed from them by burying for a day or two in the ground. Wrap up lightly before burying.

mildew.
Mix half cup white vinegar and two tablespoons of salt and wash in washing machine. Keep the bathroom vented. Run the fan and keep the door open after a shower. Moist air causes the mildew to collect on your towels etc...
