I was wondering is there a certain way to clean bath towels. The reason I ask this question is because everytime I wash the towels they end up smelling okay but still have this funk to them that I find annoying. P.S. Im not a dirty person but I just need help to figure out if im washing or drying the towels wrong.Bath Towels - How to get rid of the funk?
Don't overload the washer. Separate lights from darks as usual. Get bleach for colors and regular bleach. Buy Oxyclean for both types to give your laundry an extra boost. You could always soak your towels overnight if you'd like...maybe right after you add fabric softener you could let it run for a bit and then shut the machine off for a while? Whatever you do, do NOT let the water drain out and then let the damp towels just sit in your washer! They will develop a sour smell from being in a damp enclosed environment! Hope this helps!Bath Towels - How to get rid of the funk?
Most people use too much soap to wash their towels. That could be part of the problem. Use hot water. Never use fabric softener or dryer sheets, they break down the fibers in your towels, reducing absorption and wear. Oxy clean is good. Vinegar in the rinse is also good. I prefer to add a few drops of essential oil towards the end of the wash cycle to disinfect and deodorize my towels (lemon, lavender, ylang ylang, whatever I have on hand). Many essential oils are antibacterial and antifungal, and will freshen your towels without adding an overpowering scent. In fact, essential oils are so volatile, they evaporate in the dryer, leaving your towels clean and fresh.
It's true--fabric softener builds up in fabrics. In addition, they mask whatever odor is on the fabric. To answer your question about your towels I have a couple of suggestions. 1) Put borax or baking soda in your wash along with your laundry soap 2) Add one cup of vinegar to the rinse cycle. This will help deodorize your towels and help soften them.
Also, try washing them more frequently and make certain that they dry properly (maybe out of your damp bathroom). The moisture in your towels will contribute to them smelling funky.
Do you put them in the dryer as soon as there done washing? or do you just do it whenever you think about it. when i first moved out i had a problem with my towels smelling bad, but it was because i left them in the washer too long after they were done. So if you let them sit that might be part of the problem. Also, what kind of laundry soap are you using? maybe you just don't like the smell of it? I like Tide, so i wash my towels with a full scoop of tide, and every once in awhile i put a cup of vinegar in the rinse cycle. it helps clean off any detergent build up, and makes them come out a lot fresher and softer, and don't worry you wont be able to smell it when there done. Then i put them in the dryer as soon as i can with a dryer sheet. Some people say you shouldn't use dryer sheets with towels, but anything that helps keep the dog hair off them seems like a good idea to me.
1.Start filling washer with water and your regular detergent and then put the towels in the washer.
2. Make sure the washer is not over loaded. Make sure they can move freely.
3. Add a 1/2 a cup of white vinegar to the fabric softener dispenser. (If you don't have a dispenser go on to step 5)
4. Start the washer and wash them.
5. (If you were able to do step 3, skip this step and go to step 6) Lift the lid and add 1/2 cup of white vinegar to the final rinse.
6. Dry them as usual. Make sure they are fully dry before taking them out and folding them.
The key is the white vinegar use it instead of fabric softener because it kills germs, deodorizes and softens, with out the bad effects of making towels water proof.
Actually, bath towels get a build-up of fabric softener in them, and they don't smell good. Wash them in hot water without softener, and see if you don't like them better. I have quit using fabric softener in my wash when washing bath towels. The get you dryer when you shower also.
when you wash towels never over load the washer and never let them sit in the washer or you will have to rewash and if your towels are wet and not getting washed right away they will mold wash them with a little bleach it will get the smell out
Wash towels in hot water with 1 cup plain ammonia and 1/2 usual
detergent (ammonia will sud). Voila!
I wash all my towels with OxyClean. They seem to get cleaner somehow -- I sometimes think that regular detergent doesn't get things completely clean.
I normally wash my towels separately and use double if not triple the amount of fabric softener in the rinse cycle.
Put a dryer sheet in the dryer when drying.
