How can you clean the chalk residue out of bath towels affected by very hard tap water?

I live in London. Towels literally start to go stiff where they have absorbed the most water, and machine washing doesn't wash it out. Does anyone have any ideas, e.g. soak in vinegar, or use salt in some way?How can you clean the chalk residue out of bath towels affected by very hard tap water?
Try adding half a cup to one cup of vinegar to the rinse water. I think what you are calling chalk may be lime residue from hard water. It will clog your shower head and cake around the faucets. If it is ..white vinegar is your best friend. How can you clean the chalk residue out of bath towels affected by very hard tap water?
Top loaders usually stop when the top is lifted or when the spin is completed. Sometimes you can pull the control and it stops the machine. Front loaders are stopped by pulling the dial. I have a place to put bleach on my machine. You could put it in there. What type machine do you have?

Wash them more often.
Besides the last answer a vinegar soak should help. If not try dropping it in a bucket and pouring on a two liter of Coke and letting it set over night. The Coke eats the minerals and won't damage the fabric like CLR. My mom lays the towel out in the tub and puts the Coke in a spray gun and mists it on so it doen't waste...Whatever floats your boat. Then wash as normal.
check the ingredients in your wash powder, or use a CLR detergent...Also ask your landlord about installing a water softener.
I like the water softener idea, except then you get salt residues in your dishes. I use a Pur water filter for drinking, but that doesn't help your towel issue. I think maybe an enzyme detergent, like OxyClean may help, or whatever equivalent you have in London. Enzyme's eat away dirt, grime, all kinds of stuff, so maybe it would work on mineral build up. Hope this helps!
I would suggest installing an in-line filter. Change the filter monthly and this should cure your problem.
