What's the deal with non-absorbent bath towels.?

It seems that regardless of how much we pay for bath towels, many are non-absorbent. The just move the water around your body. Do towels need a break-in period? Is there a particular type of cloth we should look for? What's the deal with non-absorbent bath towels.?
Wash them a few times but don't add fabric softener. I also tumble dry them to make them soft but I don't use a dryer sheet either. They seem to get really absorbent after a while. What's the deal with non-absorbent bath towels.?
Actually, I learned this from my granny. About once a month she would add about a quarter cup of ammonna to her towels and it would make them very fluffy. She said it was to make them more absorbent.
Liquid fabric softeners, Downy in particular, bond with fibers to make them softer... this makes them water resistent. So you have to decide which you want more, soft towels or absorbant towels.
I agree with everyone on the fabric softener. But, would like to add that if you put white vinegar in the rinse water, they will get more absorbant and softer, too.
Avoid using fabric softeners. They tend to make towels less absorbent.
